There was a time when pickup trucks were purely for utility — hauling, towing, or pushing through rugged terrain. Today's pickups still deliver impressive capabilities, but at the same time, passengers enjoy comfortable cabins with features and space befitting a luxury vehicle.
That may be why pickups claim the top spots in yearly overall new-vehicle sales in the United States and have done so for decades. Here's a look at the most popular trucks among U.S. shoppers in 2023.
Jeep
10. Jeep Gladiator
2023 Sales: 55,188 (-29% vs. 2022)
One of the market's most capable off-road pickup trucks, the midsize Gladiator boasts 11.1 inches of ground clearance and a water-fording depth of 31.5 inches. The 2024 Gladiator is refreshed with an updated grille, 11.6 inches of ground clearance, and a new instrument panel featuring a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen display.
Nissan
9. Nissan Frontier
2023 Sales: 58,135 (-23.7% vs. 2022)
The long-awaited Frontier redesign arrived for the 2022 model year, and the midsize pickup truck was significantly improved with an engine making 310 horsepower and an updated interior. For 2024, a new Frontier Hardbody Edition looks back to Nissan's 1980s trucks.
Chevrolet
8. Chevrolet Colorado
2023 Sales: 71,081 (-20.3% vs. 2022)
Chevrolet's midsize truck offering, the Colorado, was completely redesigned for the 2023 model year with updated styling, improved capabilities, and a new infotainment system. Available exclusively as a four-door crew cab, the Chevrolet offers a wide range of trim levels for both on the road and off.
Ford
7. Ford Maverick
2023 Sales: 94,058 (+26.5% vs. 2022)
The Maverick is the entry point into Ford's extensive truck lineup. The compact truck is offered with a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain. It also seats five and can haul up to 1,500 pounds of payload in its rear bed, with a price starting around $25,500.
Toyota
6. Toyota Tundra
2023 Sales: 125,185 (+20.1% vs. 2022)
Toyota's full-size truck offering, the Tundra, was completely redesigned for the 2022 model year. With bold styling, a long list of standard features, and an available hybrid powertrain, the Tundra has seen its best sales figures in more than 10 years.
Toyota
5. Toyota Tacoma
2023 Sales: 234,768 (-1.1% vs. 2022)
The Tacoma has resided at the top of the midsize truck sales charts for almost 20 years. With a complete redesign for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, it's unlikely to take off that crown anytime soon. In addition to its improved off-road capability and an all-new interior, the Tacoma will be offered with a hybrid powertrain for the first time.
GMC
4. GMC Sierra
2023 Sales: 295,737 (+22.4% vs. 2022)
GMC offers its full-size Sierra pickup truck in multiple trim levels and hundreds of configurations, ranging from basic work trucks to the luxurious Denali Ultimate. The Sierra delivers impressive towing and hauling capability with a full lineup of powerful engine options.
Ram
3. Ram Pickup
2023 Sales: 444,926 (-5.0% vs. 2022)
Consistently ranked as one of the top three selling pickup trucks in the U.S., the full-size Ram pickup is available in light- and heavy-duty variants. The Ram also features a few special versions, including the 702-hp extreme off-road Ram TRX. Look for an all-new Ram Pickup coming for the 2025 model year.
Chevrolet
2. Chevrolet Silverado
2023 Sales: 555,148 (+6.1% vs. 2022)
Chevrolet's full-size pickup truck, the Silverado, delivers a proper blend of capability and high-tech features. The truck's innovative multi-flex tailgate adds considerable utility to this big truck, and the Silverado is available with parent General Motors' advanced hands-free driving system, Super Cruise.
Ford
1. Ford F-Series
2023 Sales: 750,789 (+14.8% vs. 2022)
Not only has the Ford F-Series been the bestselling truck in the U.S. for 47 consecutive years, but the full-size pickup has outsold every other vehicle for more than four decades. The F-Series Super Duty features class-leading towing and hauling, which can tow up to 40,000 pounds when properly equipped. Ford also offers a fully electric version of the F-Series, the F-150 Lightning.

I have loved cars and trucks since childhood, and that fascination with anything that drives is just as strong today. As a teenager, I knew I wanted to become an automotive journalist, and during the past three decades, I have driven, written about, and photographed all manner of automobiles ranging from affordable econocars to exotic supercars. With the idea that there is a perfect car, truck, or SUV for everyone, my goal is to help consumers determine the right one for their wants and needs.
